INTRODUCTION

The Sciences of Reading for All

Edward Orton-Gillingham (EOG) is an educational institution founded by Ann Edward. They focus on education and training to assist children, especially those experiencing language-based learning difficulties like dyslexia. They utilize an effective educational method called “Orton-Gillingham,” which incorporates teaching that engages all senses (sight, sound, and touch).

In addition to training for educators, parents, and education professionals, EOG has also developed an application called “Blending Board,” which is a game that implements the Orton-Gillingham approach to help children learn to read and spell in an enjoyable manner. This application is specifically designed to aid children with language-based learning difficulties in achieving success in literacy.

CHALLENGES

Literacy problems in children who have language-based learning difficulties such as dyslexia

The issues identified by Edward Orton-Gillingham (EOG) that prompted the creation of the Blending Board Game for children, especially those with dyslexia, are as follows:

  • Difficulty in Reading and Spelling:
Children with dyslexia often face challenges in reading and spelling words correctly due to the difficulty in connecting sounds with specific letters.
  • Difficulty in Blending Sounds:
They frequently struggle to blend letter sounds into meaningful words.
  • Limitations of Traditional Methods:
Traditional teaching methods are sometimes not effective enough for children with dyslexia to grasp and practice sound blending skills.
  • Lack of Interest and Motivation:
Some children lose interest and motivation in learning to read and write because of the difficulties they encounter.
  • Lowered Self-Confidence:
Difficulties in reading and spelling also affect the self-confidence of children, making them reluctant to engage in literacy-related activities.

GOALS

The goals that Edward Orton-Gillingham (EOG) aims to achieve through the creation of the Blending Board application are as follows:

Enhancing Children's Literacy: EOG aims to improve the literacy skills of children, especially those facing language-based learning difficulties like dyslexia.

Increasing Learning Motivation: EOG hopes that the application will enhance children's learning motivation by providing a fun and interactive learning experience.

Reducing Frustration: Through more interactive teaching, EOG seeks to reduce the levels of frustration often experienced by children with dyslexia during the literacy process.

Strengthening the Connection Between Sounds and Letters: The application's goal is to reinforce the relationship between language sounds, letters, and words so that children can improve their reading and spelling abilities.
